Extending Block Play
As I mentioned in my previous post, I love blocks. You may get a bit tired of me posting about blocks, but there is just so much you can do with blocks and I wanted to reignite Asher’s love for blocks and make them exciting again.
I found these Jenga blocks at Kmart for just $5.
I decided to add a bit of colour to the blocks by using a bit of food colouring to brighten them up. I separated the blocks into 3 different bowls. I then took a jug of warm water, about 1/4 cup of vinegar and a fair bit of food colouring and soaked the blocks in 3 different colours. I only had red, blue and green food colouring at home. The more food colouring you use the richer colour you will get. I mostly guessed the recipe so I can’t give exact measurements. It’s all trial and error really.
I only soaked the blocks in the liquid for around 1 minute and then I lay the blocks out on a tray and let them dry out in the sun.
As soon as I put these blocks out on the mat for Asher to play with, he got super excited and began exploring them. I love these blocks because they offer variety to our current blocks.
These blocks can be used as a simple stack and knock over game or they can even be used in small world play. You could even add these blocks into playdough play and use the blocks as “bricks” and the playdough as “cement”. I wonder what structures you could build? The possibilities are endless!
